However, for all of its benefits, compressing air has one major drawback: It takes a lot of energy. In fact, it is estimated that 10% of the world’s energy is used for compressing air. Fortunately, compressors have come a long way. While the fixed-speed models of the past used tremendous amounts of energy, modern compressors with variable speed drives can cut that consumption in half (or even more).
