Torque and angle-controlled electric screwdrivers are powerful, intelligent, connected tools for Industry 4.0, reliable and ergonomic to use. These screwdrivers are critical components of the assembly process. Modern industrial assembly plants are complex systems where every component and unit must be optimized for quality, efficiency, and safety. Complete system integration is the key to efficient production. These torque-controlled screwdrivers are multifunctional smart tools, supported by connected software that ensures error-free operation for maximum productivity.

Torque-controlled electric assembly tools are a complete solution for high-quality industrial assembly of bolted or screwed components. Fully integrated and connected control and visualization systems ensure consistent precision, reliability, and quality. These electric screwdrivers, which monitor both torque and tightening angle, also address many human-factor challenges. For example:

  • Integrated smart error-monitoring functions to eliminate operator mistakes, avoiding loose or missing screws.
  • Sophisticated technology and connectivity for high precision across all assembly types, combined with the fastest cycle times to boost productivity.
  • Advanced ergonomic designs for quiet, well-balanced tools that reduce operator fatigue and enhance productivity.

In effect, a torque-controlled screwdriver features the latest technologies to improve productivity, quality, and efficiency.

Innovative Technologies in Torque/Angle-Controlled Screwdrivers

Industry 4.0 and controlled screwdrivers.

Assembly plants typically seek electric tools that benefit from the latest connectivity technologies, as well as greater power, flexibility with battery-powered screwdrivers, increased durability, enhanced reliability, higher speeds, greater precision, and reduced service needs for increased productivity. The torque value of controlled tools is traceable. This value is recorded when the tightening is performed at the correct torque. No additional tightening is required, thereby eliminating the need for ratchet wrenches (sometimes used to verify the original tightening process further down the line). This helps reduce labor costs and significantly boosts the productivity of modern assembly plants.

Torque-controlled screwdriving: clear and reliable feedback for the operator

Clear and reliable feedback to the operator is essential for quality assurance. In the case of connected, torque-controlled screwdrivers, visual and even audible indicators are integrated into the tool, allowing the operator to be immediately informed of any issues related to the tightening process. Reliable feedback ensures that operators take the necessary corrective actions in the event of a problem during the assembly process.

Tracking the entire tightening process

The torque-controlled electric screwdriver is the final component of a complete quality control system. This type of tool is capable of monitoring the number of turns or the angle throughout the entire tightening process, starting as soon as the operator pulls the trigger. In addition to detecting cross-threaded or damaged screws, checking the screw seating and tightening angle also ensures the complete status of the fastening element. The angle monitoring function is also used to detect missing components (such as washers), and cables/materials stuck under the screw head.

One torque-controlled electric tool replaces several pneumatic tools

A controlled screwdriver replaces multiple pneumatic tools.

Choosing a torque-controlled electric screwdriver over pneumatic tools significantly reduces the total number of tools required to perform the same tasks. The applied torque is fully programmable within the tool’s torque range. With this multi-program capability, a single tool can be used for many applications requiring different target torques. This multi-program feature generally allows for a reduction of up to 20% in the total number of fastening tools required, and occasionally even more.

Reduced operating costs

The virtual station is the core of assembly.

The virtual station is the core of assembly.

The introduction of electric screwdrivers reduces the operating costs of assembly plants. In pneumatic systems, the operating cost of compressors is very high, and leaks in the air network account for up to 30% of the operating costs. Typically, the energy consumption of an electric screwdriver is only about one-twentieth of that of a pneumatic tool. It is also possible to use just one control box for several controlled screwdrivers, primarily thanks to wireless technologies. The virtual station is the core of assembly functions. It stores all the information related to the assembly process, allowing you to track production progress in real time. It controls the tools, communication, and accessories of the assembly station. By managing multiple tools and working on a virtual station, reduces cable management tasks and the number of network connections and hardware components required. This makes production rebalancing quicker. The reduced number of hardware components cuts electricity consumption by up to 80% and limits the environmental footprint.

Ergonomics of torque-controlled electric screwdrivers

The seven ergonomic factors.

The seven ergonomic factors.

In terms of ergonomics, these screwdrivers are highly sought after for their features and must meet the following criteria: lighter weight, less vibration, reduced noise, and minimized operator fatigue. Electric screwdrivers generate less noise than pneumatic tools, offering sound levels of 50-60 dBA for a quieter work environment. Additionally, electric tools do not produce oil mist, contributing to a cleaner workplace. Finally, thanks to their programmable step-by-step tightening strategies, it is easy to adjust the tightening operation to significantly improve the operator's experience, particularly with regard to torque response.

An electric assembly tool opens up to the benefits of advanced accessories and features that ensure tightness adapted to assembly requirements, such as program selection, VIN number management, and control of counting sequences. Communication functions for simple and seamless integration with production systems are also available with electric screwdrivers. For example, Open Protocol, Fieldbus systems, and even the ability to use client-specific protocols are supported. Of course, this type of screwdriver, paired with its control box, allows the management of several accessories at a single station (virtual or not), such as light indicators, socket boxes, or digital I/O (inputs/outputs).

Exclusive features of Atlas Copco electric screwdrivers

Low reaction tools with accessories Low reaction tools
  • TurboTight®: This revolutionary fastening strategy offers unmatched user comfort by allowing the tool to reduce the reaction force, significantly enhancing its ergonomics.
  • TrueAngle®: This feature eliminates operator influence using a gyroscope to measure tool movements, thus increasing the accuracy of angle measurement. It allows for handheld angle-controlled tightening while eliminating operator influence. This reduces the angle window and makes common assembly issues (e.g., defective or missing components, or damaged threads) easy to identify. It also helps avoid premature stoppages and detects re-tightening. All these benefits contribute to improved quality and reduced scrap and rework costs.
  • Low Reaction Tools: The latest technological advancements have led to the development of new electric screwdrivers (with or without batteries) with low reaction torque (LRT). These screwdrivers enable high tightening torques (up to 150Nm at present) to be achieved with one hand, while maintaining traceability of all screw applications. These tools are also connected and compatible with data processing systems and Industry 4.0 standards.
