Landfills may cause severe environmental impact if leachate and gas emissions are not controlled.
The chemical make-up of the leachate varies depending on the products taken in for disposal. Typically, the leachate will be composed of a range of compounds including nitrogen, organic carbons, chlorides, phenols, solvents and heavy metals.
The complex chemistry of the leachate and the difficulty in abstracting it from within the fill can make management particularly onerous. Especially as the Waste Management Regulations are rigorously enforced by the relevant regulatory bodies.
Generally, most landfills adopt a grid system of boreholes penetrating down almost to the base of the landfill. These boreholes must be carefully designed to ensure the longevity of use as the landfill shifts and settles, and also to induce as much flow of leachate into it, particularly as many historic daily cover systems were not placed with permeability in mind.
Once abstraction wells are in place the equipment to abstract it needs careful consideration. Most now require intrinsically safe equipment such as pneumatic pumps or eductor/ejector systems. These use a venturi effect to recover the leachate. This method is being used very successfully across the United Kingdom.
In order to remove the leachate from the landfill for treatment, these pumps need compressed air.
Our compressed air equipment is designed to help you achieve 50% energy savings, on average, which will help you keep your costs down and meet current as well as future government regulations.
How can we help you?
Atlas Copco’s GA Variable Speed Drive+ (VSD+) technology brings a game-changing revolution in the compressor industry as it offers a compact motor and footprint thanks to its in-house design and iPM (Permanent Magnet) technology. The GA 11-45 VSD+ energy consumption by on average 50%, with uptimes, assured even in the harshest operational conditions. The GA 11-45 VSD+ is the air compressor of the future! It will set a new standard for years to come, positioning Atlas Copco as a leader in the compressed air industry. Other benefits of the Atlas Copco Variable Speed Drive+ technology includes:
- No wasted idling times or blow-off losses during operation.
- Minimizes system leakage due to a lower system pressure.
- EMC Compliance to directives (2004/108/EG).
