Self-piercing rivet joint development

Industrial application and motor vehicle lightweight car body joining made easy

When your application requires a strong joint

The extensive range of rivets and tooling, developed with over 30 years of experience, enables us to provide sound and rapid solutions for our customers' application needs. Meeting and exceeding customer expectations when faced with the challenges of finding that special rivet for a specific purpose is one of our many strengths.

Application-specific rivets

During the design stage of a vehicle, the Applications team works with customers' materials to determine the rivet and die combination that optimizes the integrity of the joint.

Simulation aids rivet design

We use simulation software to facilitate the design and optimization of our processes. This allows us to evaluate a wide range of parameters without having to do extensive physical testing.

Geometry is key

The geometry of a rivet has a significant effect on the joining process as well as other influencing factors such as head styles, hardness levels, materials, and packaging.

Challenges

Combining steel, castings, and aluminum allows for resourceful and intelligent vehicle design, regardless of how the diverse physical properties of the materials can complicate assembly.

The solution

Focused, individualized joint development for every customer application is a cornerstone of Henrob self-piercing rivets and riveting systems. We already have an extensive library of rivets that fit many different automotive applications.

Years of experience and joint data provide a solid foundation for our Applications Engineers to approach testing rivet geometries, sizes, and correlating dies when developing a comprehensive solution for our customers.

With labs located around the world, we have the facilities to test small scale projects or large body-in-white prototypes.

Our 3D modeling software can be used to help predict material flow and internal stresses and strains. To ensure we have the right fit, we will test materials that you supply which will offer the opportunity to trial and validate riveting parameters. Rivets and dies chosen to join a specific material combination are assessed for suitability:

  • Ensure the rivet correctly flares and engages in the materials
  • Determine how strong the joint will be
  • Simulate production variation to establish joint design robustness

Let us help you find the perfect rivet, die, and rivet setting system for your vehicle's production before you even finish your new vehicle design. If we don't already have a solution that fits, we will work with you to develop one.

Our range of self-piercing rivets are the solution to today’s joining challenges. In an effort to address the need for both increased structural safety at the same time as lighter overall bodyweight, automotive manufacturers are incorporating mixed materials of varying strengths and ductility into their car bodies.

By combining advanced engineering, simulations, and testing, we have developed a rivet line capable of joining these mixed materials securely and dependably.
