Meet Sharil Bin Ahmad: Paving the Path of IT Excellence at Atlas Copco Singapore
What it takes to be an "IT Guy"
From the day Sharil embarked on his career with Atlas Copco, he assumed the role of an IT Support guy. “My main responsibility has always been to provide exceptional IT support to our users. But in today's context - my role has expanded to not only provide IT support for the users but solely lead the IT department. Being the go-to person for all things in IT can be challenging, yet it's an opportunity I wholeheartedly embrace. While I may not have all the answers, but I am committed to doing my best, guiding users to the right resources and experts. Behind the scenes, running the IT department independently involves significant backend work that often goes unnoticed. Despite this, I take pride in ensuring everything runs smoothly. With our Service Desk now handling first-line support, I can focus on providing valuable "add-on" solutions to the business. This exciting shift allows me to make an even greater positive impact within the organization”.
Sharil's journey with Atlas Copco
“It has been a long journey for me in Atlas Copco and just like my job roles and responsibilities - IT support and organization has gone through major changes and developments. I started out my career way back in 1990/91 and IT department was a 'stand alone" service in providing local IT support to our local customer center. And now - our IT organization has grown as a global organization which started off with ASAP, and then ACBS and now AC ITS (Atlas Copco IT Services). As for me - I am proud to say that I am in the APAC ACITS organization and now we provide our IT services on a global reach. And as for me - with my IT experienced - I am able to support not only my users in SG but beyond to other users within SEA countries.
Sharil's contribution to technological advancements
Over the years, Sharil has been an integral part of several pivotal projects. He played a crucial role in transitioning from Lotus Notes databases to modern applications and was involved in migrating the company's mail services to Microsoft O365. “The earliest form of our CRM (CTP) and local websites were developed using Lotus Notes and I was one of the earliest participants to attend the initial training. This training has brought me to Airpower and London respectively. Additionally, Sharil spearheaded the successful transition from Windows 7 & XP to Windows 10, with Windows 11 on the horizon".
For Sharil, success is not merely measured in accomplishments but in the personal growth achieved while working and playing with Atlas Copco. Embracing change and embracing the opportunities to develop his mindset and knowledge have been central to his journey. “ I work and play throughout my journey with the company. For sure - working in Atlas Copco has always been challenging and with the constant changes and development in IT environment - it does not allow your mind to remain stagnant but it forces you to develop your mind set and knowledge”.
What was Sharil's driving force?
"What really inspires me most is the TRUST, SUPPORT, and CONFIDENCE that has been entrusted to me by the local management, my colleagues (users), and my IT support team to manage the IT operations independently throughout my IT career. Their belief in my abilities has been the driving force behind my work ethic".
In the words of Robert Collier, Sharil's personal motto resonates deeply to, "Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day-in and day-out." Indeed, Sharil exemplifies this saying by inspiring all those who dream of a fulfilling career at Atlas Copco - a place where passion, dedication, and growth are nurtured and celebrated.
Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day-in and day-out
