Jaldoot - Watering hope in the parched lands

Jaldoot 1.0: Oct 2015 – July 2017

The project Jaldoot is a joint endeavor between Atlas Copco Charitable Foundation and Sevavardhini, an NGO based in Pune.

Project Jaldoot, was established to empower the locals with technical knowledge, inspire them to actively participate, plan and contribute to their villages’ development programs. The Sanskrit term ‘Jaldoot’ means “Messenger of Water.” Being true to its name, the project succeeded in ensuring water availability throughout the year across 15 districts and 25 villages of Maharashtra. The project helped villagers to build and construct structures for soil and water conservation for raising groundwater levels. By June 2016, the project ensured substantial water storage benefitting hundreds of villages.

Project implementation process

Implementing Jaldoot 1.0 consisted of a series of training programs by domain experts from areas such as surface and groundwater management, water budgeting, and participatory approach to watershed development. For the yearlong program, 25 villages were selected after due diligence, and 2 individuals from each village were chosen as a Jaldoot. Among the selected two individuals, one represented the local partner NGO, and the other represented the village. These individuals then went through 6 training programs having a duration of 5 to 6 days each and were trained for watershed management.

Project presentation and gratification

After completing the training program, the participants presented their detailed watershed development plan (DPR – Detail Project Report) for their respective villages. These presentations were then assessed by “Water For All” officials and other experts. The participants with the most feasible plans were awarded the prize money for implementing the watershed projects in their respective villages.

Project outcome

Jaldoot 1.0 led in building new soil & water conservation structures, repairing existing structures in villages, and building low-cost watershed treatments like CCTs. The project proved that small steps towards water conservation can make a big impact. The following was the outcome:

Jaldoot - information and facts

Jaldoot 1.0 created a positive impact in the villages where it was implemented. The participants who became Jaldoots across all the villages still continue to work for the project. With the help of the project, over 88,000 beneficiaries from more than 50% of villages have overcome drinking water problems and have sufficient water for irrigation resulting in overall prosperity.

Jaldoot is a unique concept where equal efforts were taken on both tangible and intangible outcomes.
