Hot Tapping: in pressurized compressed air pipeline

14 December, 2022

We all are familiar with the common phrase “One stop solution" but now it is time you get familiar with the phrase “No stop solution”.

At Atlas Copco, we believe there must be the right compressed air solution for every industry and related application. However, there are site-related challenges which lead to the loss of energy efficiency and money example compressed air leakages, pressure drop, air quality issues, and many more.

With the advancement of technology,  most of the challenges can be overcome through a compressed-air audit of your plant.  A thorough compressed air audit of your plant will help you to find potential energy-saving opportunities which will later help you to save money and improve your compressed air utilization.

Since we are committed to sustainable and energy-efficient products and services, Our AIRSCan services come with features which will improve the efficiency of the plant through modern sophisticated equipment without any disturbance to your production plant.

However, there are a few measurements wherein tappings are required in the compressed air line. These airlines usually included the headers towards a particular application where the shutdown are hardly available. A considerable part of these headers is the main compressed airline headers where shutdown is not an option. With the increase in thirst for production, the plants can never compromise on an important utility such as compressed air. Hence, we were presented with one of the major challenges that we were facing till now – The unavailability of shutdown in 24 x 7 running plants.

As innovation is our core value and we always strive to provide the best in class solutions to our customers our energy audit has come up with a new solution to tackle this problem.

Our energy audit team has started doing the online installation of flow meters in the compressed airlines.

With our inline tapping solutions, It is now possible to make tapings on pressurised compressed airlines without depressurising the airlines. With the trust of Atlas Copco and the reliability of the manual processes, we have secured drills to drill through the compressed air pipeline without leaving a leakage. The process is completely safe and tested several times.

Many of our customers are amazed to know that tapings have been made in their compressed air main headers even without speaking of shutdowns.

Recently, our energy audit team conducted a compressed-air audit at a renowned aluminium plant without asking for any shutdown of the header. This all is possible through the inline tapping solution which was conducted with all the safety requirements.

Since this activity is similar to Hot tapping but without the involvement of hot jobs like welding/motorized drilling involved, the online pressurized tapping is sometimes referred to as Hot taping.
