What's an STbench?

Getting to know the latest joint simulation bench

Meet The STbench, Atlas Copco’s latest joint simulator bench.

It provides fast and accurate tests for tools. In a past blog post, we discussed the pros and cons of testing tools online or in the tool crib. The good news is a joint simulator bench like Atlas Copco’s STbench can help in both cases.

Furthermore, it’s important to understand how the STbench works and how it can speed up mobile tool testing, making it both fast and accurate.

A multitasking bench above the rest

The idea behind a joint simulator bench is that it can replicate different joint rates simply by allowing the user to select the ideal rate from a computer screen.

This way, torque tool calibration tests can be conducted in normal operating conditions without using the joint on manufactured goods.

Atlas Copco’s STbench simulates joints using a hydraulic braking system. The computer on the STbench controls this system in real-time to create the perfect joint simulation during the mobile tool testing. As the system is hydraulic, the STbench virtually has no delay in starting new torque tool testing.

A computer will control the braking rate, and at the end of a run-down, the system will be ready to start a new rundown immediately. This is because no mechanical part needs to be loosened at the end of each tightening.

In this way, the STbench will easily cut torque tool calibration testing times in half. How? These tests can be run on the production line, avoiding the waste of time or removing the tool and replacing it with a backup one.

Benefits of the STbench

The benefits of the STbench do not stop there. The top three biggest benefits include:

  • The STbench shares the same software as the STpad and STpalm, so it can run all the different inspections the user can run.
  • The STbench (like the STpad) can communicate with our Power Focus 4000, Power Focus 6000, and Power Macs to calibrate the tools by comparing the readings from the tool with the ones from the STbench.
  • The STbench can be purchased with a docking station for an STpad instead of a computer so that operators can dock and undock the STpad from the STbench to use it in areas with limited accessibility.
