Atlas Copco’s PF6 FlexSystem is a modular, space-saving controller system for fastening operations.

The PF6 FlexSystem: Enabling flexible automation

6 minute(s) to read

Designed for fixtured applications, the PF6 FlexSystem is lean, compact, and scalable to fit specific application requirements based on demand. This controller shares software commonality with the Power Focus 6000 controller, which makes for a familiar user interface and easy learning of how the system operates.

The Basics:

The PF6 FlexSystem is a system made of five important components. The FlexCarrier, which is available in two versions (3-slot and 6-slot), routes power, communication, interconnection, cooling capabilities, and more through the system. This component replaces the distributor box of the previous generation PowerMACS 4000 controller, saving valuable floor space. It also eliminates the need for additional cable connections within the system.

Next is the FlexController component. The FlexController is the brains of the system, containing the IAM card that has all programming data, and system software on it. This component also facilitates internal and external communication and controls up to 50 drives or spindles. Then we have the FlexDrive component, which runs the QST spindles and converts power to suitable voltage levels.

Following this we have the FlexBlanks of the system. FlexBlanks are required to fill empty slots in the FlexCarrier in order to fulfill the IP54 rating of the system and emergency stop functionalities. The final required component of the system is the FlexMSB. This component enables operators to shut off power to the PF6 FlexSystem. Depending on plant requirements, the FlexMSB is available in a 30-amp or 60-amp unit.

Unmatched flexibility and scalability

Now that we’ve got the components of the PF6 FlexSystem laid out, we can get into some of the major values and advantages this controller can bring to production in this day and age of Industry 4.0. Perhaps the most important feature of the PF6 FlexSystem is its modular, adaptable design. Because of this design, variations in production are easy for Atlas Copco to fulfill. The PF6 FlexSystem is incredibly scalable. You can pay for what you need now, and should you need more functionality down the road, upgrading is simple and hassle-free with Atlas Copco.

Further, the PF6 FlexSystem was designed to work seamlessly on both manual stations (such as pulldown stations or wheel nut multiples) and automated stations or robotic cells. As a fully integrated system, the controller supports all QST tools, along with high torque and heavy-duty cycles.

Smaller and more efficient

Compared to the PowerMACS 4000 controller, the PF6 FlexSystem is 88% lighter and saves up to 97% more floor space. There are fewer system connections, no internal cabling, and shorter cable lengths. This makes for incredibly easy cable management. The system is modular, lightweight, and compact, which allows the controllers and drives to be mounted closer to a powerhead, robot, or overhead rail.

Because the PF6 FlexSystem operates on Atlas Copco’s ToolsTalk 2 software, installation and programming is a simple, streamlined process that many users will already be familiar with. The controller’s webHMI allows for easy troubleshooting.  With the PF6 FlexSystem, you can expect reduced installation costs, increased production uptime, and more floor space in your plant.
