Success story: Custom Atlas Copco safety trigger for a major renewable energy company

Requiring safety triggers for assembly applications promotes great operator safety and ergonomics. A safety trigger is used on a variety of electric tools, providing the operator with extra safety by requiring the user to use both hands to activate it. This significantly reduces the risk of pinch injuries.

A service provider in the renewable construction industry knew the importance of requiring safety triggers on their operators' tools; however, space was also important when choosing the right tool for their assembly. Their application was completed in an area where space was limited, meaning their tools needed to be slim. So, they reached out to Atlas Copco in search of a safer, more ergonomic torque tool for their high-torque joints. Read on to discover the custom tooling solution that transformed their assembly.

Manufacturing in extreme environments

As a renewable energy company that manufactures predominantly for the wind energy industry, our customer is familiar with operations out in the field, and their operators would often find themselves completing applications in cramped environments. This meant that the design of the tool was vital, along with its ergonomics and power.

The power of the Tensor Revo

It was clear to our experts that the Tensor Revo nutrunner with dual trigger was the right tool for them. It’s the most productive high torque nutrunner available on the market and has tightening speeds more than three times faster than its nearest competitor. Incorporating this tool into their assembly would significantly increase their uptime and quality.

However, as stated previously, our customer was required to complete applications in unique, space-limited areas. While the Tensor Revo would greatly benefit their assembly, the safety trigger is mounted on the side of the tool, leaving operators less room in narrow spaces. So, our experts devised a custom inline trigger solution that could be retrofitted onto their existing systems. Not only would an inline solution give their operators more space, but it would also help operators to support the weight of the tool and reduce stress on their arms and shoulders.

The resolution

After demoing our custom product, our customer decided to move forward with our solution over our competitor’s. In addition to improving their quality, productivity, and ergonomics, this has made a huge impact on their assembly by eliminating the occurrence of serious injuries affecting their operators. Furthermore, reducing the chance of operator injuries has saved them thousands in injury-related fees.
