Every second of downtime costs the manufacturing industry millions. Over time, that money can add up fast. Yet, many overlook one small detail, such as the cost of a loose ground screw, which adds up fast and contributes to the downtime costs that could keep their workstations running efficiently and achieving sustainable profitability.
Ground screws in manufacturing environments can become loose for a variety of reasons. Whether from the vibrations of daily work or improper installation, loose ground screws can cause equipment failure and a variety of safety risks. Taking preventative measures to protect your business and your operators is crucial.
So, how can we eliminate those pesky things? The answer is Industrial Location Mapping (ILM).
Securing connections more effectively
Industrial Location Mapping (ILM) is Atlas Copco’s simple location solution to making sure your tool is only working where it is supposed to. ILM has the following hardware:
- ILM Anchor – built-in movement detection, low power use (24 V), reference point for UWB-based localization, possibility for connection with external systems via network
- ILM Tags – power supply directly from the tool, built-in orientation detection, tool tag can simulate a second-start-trigger for easy integration, no software interfaces required
ILM is designed with the capability to differentiate between fasteners that are 30 cm or further apart and can handle a complete production line or parts of a line, ensuring that each tightening is only allowed in the correct area using a digital barrier which, in turn, eliminates loose ground screws as well as other potential safety and production risks.
It’s common for some customers to have a lot of battery tools. When this is the case, the operator may use a tool in a different station that isn’t programmed for, which could cause it not to tighten to the specific station. The easy integration from the tool tag allows the tool to be more accurate and specific to each vehicle on the line using the ILM software solution. On top of that, ILM can also be used to accurately separate tools from left to right sides and tighten bolts in different orientations.
Achieving Seamless Production with Atlas Copco
To sum it up, Industrial Location Mapping is an easy solution to tie a tool to each station, eliminating the risk of loose ground screws and other flaws in the tightening process.
