ILS 2.0: New upgrades delivering improved operator experience and operator guidance

Introducing SpotPoint 2.0: New upgrades

Atlas Copco is proud to introduce Industrial Location SpotPoint (ILS) 2.0! ILS has been a part of Atlas Copco’s line of Industrial Location platforms, and now that it has some new upgrades, it will be even easier to error proof your assembly. 

But first, a brief explanation of ILS

Industrial Location SpotPoint is a wireless, bolt-level error proofing solution for a variety of tools. ILS consists of Industrial Location Guidance (ILG) software, all-in-one sensors, and passive tags to track the tools or parts and offer operator guidance during production. The sensor triangulates the position of the tool tag and generates location data values for the transmitter location. In this way, ILS not only knows where the tool or part is but also if the operator is performing the task correctly and at the right time.

Guiding operators

Much like ILG, ILS aligns perfectly with Industry 4.0 thanks to the incorporation of ILG’s error proofing software. ILS is now able to guide operators through the application process, providing quality assurance and peace of mind that the task has been completed accurately. Along with tracking the torque being applied to bolts, ILS can also track the correct bolt tightening sequence if the application requires it. This reduces the occurrence of errors or inconsistencies on the line, especially in cases where operators are using tools with a good line of sight.

All-in-one sensors

Another change to ILS is in the sensors. These sensors are now transmitting infrared light onto the station or the part so that it can be reflected by the tags. This process is how the system can track the tools. This allows ILS to enable or disable the tools based on the tool’s location relative to the station. This is also how the system tracks whether the application is being completed accurately. Since the sensor is transmitting infrared light, ILS is more efficient than before because the tags are now smaller and passive.

Passive tool and part tags

Another great feature is that the tool and part tags are now passive! Rather than using power, they simply reflect the light to the sensors like mirrors. This allows the tags to be smaller, easier to use, and more ergonomic. Since they are smaller, more tags can be attached to the tool, thus allowing for more flexibility and uptime on the line. This is because the tool can be oriented in any way, allowing both right- and left-handed operators to hold the tools comfortably without having to rearrange the tags.

To sum it up

With these upgrades, Industrial Location SpotPoint 2.0 better aligns with Industry 4.0 technology. Incorporated with ILG software, passive tags, and all-in-one sensors, ILS is making error proofing and quality assurance easier to achieve.
